Praying With Persistence

I have been looking at a powerful parable told by Jesus about the persistent widow and the unjust judge. This story emphasizes the importance of persistent prayer and faith. It invites believers to reflect on their relationship with God and the nature of God's justice.

Then He spoke a parable to them, that men always ought to pray and not lose heart, saying: “There was in a certain city a judge who did not fear God nor regard man. Now there was a widow in that city; and she came to him, saying, ‘Get justice for me from my adversary.’ And he would not for a while; but afterward he said within himself, ‘Though I do not fear God nor regard man, yet because this widow troubles me I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me.’ ” Then the Lord said, “Hear what the unjust judge said. And shall God not avenge His own elect who cry out day and night to Him, though He bears long with them?

I tell you that He will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will He really find faith on the earth?” Luke 18:1-8 NKJV

Jesus is sharing a story in which a widow seeks justice from a judge who neither feared God nor cared about people. Despite the judge's reluctance, the widow persists in approaching him with her plea. This interaction highlights her determination in the face of discouragement and potential dismissal.

The unjust judge represents an authority figure lacking compassion. Such figures were common. His lack of fear of God and indifference to justice serve as a stark contrast to God's righteousness. By using this example, Jesus is painting a vivid picture of worldly systems that tend to fail the vulnerable. Yet the widow's persistence brings change, reminding us that perseverance yields results even in unjust situations.

The widow's determination serves as a powerful reminder of the need for persistent prayer in our lives. In our spiritual journeys, we often feel that our pleas are unheard. So Jesus uses this contrast between the powerful and corrupt judge and the defenseless and helpless widow to begin his lesson on the importance of persistent prayer. However, this parable offers reassurance that God hears our cries and values our persistence. The widow's unwavering commitment to seek justice encourages believers to approach God with confidence, believing that He will respond.

Jesus states that He will swiftly avenge His followers. He concludes the parable with a profound truth: if an unjust judge grants justice due to persistence, imagine how much more a just and loving God will respond to His children. This highlights God's character and also reinforces the promise that God remains attentive to our needs, regardless of our circumstances.

In verse 8, Jesus poses a poignant question: “When the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?” This reflection prompts an examination of one's faith amidst tribulations. During periods of anticipation and ambiguity, it is possible to experience discouragement. However, the call to faith remains steadfast. The call to faith endures. We are challenged to trust in God's timing and goodness, much like the persistent widow who sought justice despite delays.

As we meditate on this parable, we are encouraged to persist in prayer and stretch our faith. Although Jesus frequently tells them to "fear not" or "do not be afraid" throughout His ministry, these instances directly confront their unbelief during specific trials. Life's challenges can be discouraging, yet we are continually reminded to bring our concerns before God. Our prayers and petitions are an exercise of faith. Praying with tenacity will transform your hearts and deepen your trust in God’s plan. I know this to be true because that is what has been happening in my life.
